Making myki your key
myki, Victoria’s new ticketing system for public transport, is replacing the current ticketing system on selected regional town buses. In the future, you will be able to use myki on Melbourne's trains, trams, buses and V-Line trains and coaches.
myki is a durable smart card you can use over and over again. myki makes using public transport fast and easy. And with myki you will always get the best fare every time you travel
If you don't travel often, or you forget your myki, you have the option to purchase a short term ticket from the bus driver at the time of travel.
What are the fares for Ballarat, Geelong and Seymour?
myki money
Zones | Single Zone | Two Zones
2 hour | Full fare | $1.80 | $3.00 |
Concession | $0.90 | $1.50
Daily | Full fare | $3.20 | $6.00 |
Concession | $1.60 | $3.00 |
For example: You are a concession customer who travels to the shopping centre in the morning. As you get on the bus you touch on with your myki. As you disembark you touch off. You are charged $0.90 (2 hour, single zone). Three hours later, you travel to the library. The ticketing system recognises you have already travelled that day and instead of charging you another $0.90 (2 Hours, Single zone) you are only charged $0.70 (the difference up to the daily rate of $1.60 for Daily, single zone). You save $0.20. |

What if you do not have a myki yet?
Short term tickets are available on the bus for customers who do not have a myki.
What are provisional fares?
When you travel with your myki, you need to touch on and touch off to ensure the best fare is calculated. If you don't touch off, the system doesn't know where you have travelled and you will be charged a 'provisional fare' that may be more than what you would otherwise have paid.
For regional buses travelling only in a single zone, the provisional fare is $0.20 more than the best fare. For buses travelling in more than one zone, the provisional fare is between $0.20 and $1.40 more than the best fare.
Touching off ensures you always pay the best fare for the way you travel. If you fail to touch off as you get off the bus, the provisional fare will be deducted from your myki money balance the next time you touch on (even if this isn't until the next day). It's a bit like having to pay the maximum charge in a car park when you don't produce your ticket on the way out.
Provisional fare amounts on buses
The following outlines the provisional fare that may be charged in the event you do not touch off at the completion of your bus trip.
Example 1: Your bus operates entirely within a single regional zone (e.g. regional city transit services):
Best fare - charged if you touch on and touch off: | $1.80 |
Provisional fare - charged if you don't touch off: | $2.00 |
Difference (= extra you pay if you don't touch off): | $0.20 |
Example 2: Your bus operates within two zones and you travel only within one zone:
Best fare - charged if you touch on and touch off: | $1.80 |
Provisional fare - charged if you don't touch off: | $3.20 |
Difference (= extra you pay if you don't touch off): | $1.40 |
Example 3: Your bus operates within two zones and you travel within both zones:
Best fare - charged if you touch on and touch off: | $3.00 |
Provisional fare - charged if you don't touch off: | $3.20 |
Difference (= extra you pay if you don't touch off): | $0.20 |
(All examples assume a full fare myki. For concession myki, the amounts are half the above.) |
Can everyone be charged a provisional fare?
No. If you touch on in a zone covered by a valid myki pass, you will not pay a provisional fare. But touching on and off provides bus operators with useful information to give the best possible service, so always remember to touch off at the end of your trip even with a myki pass.
How do I avoid being charged a provisional fare?
Always touch on and touch off to receive the best fare for the way you travel.
How do you top up your myki?
