MEDIA RELEASE “GIVE IT TO G.E.R.F - Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund”

Due to the impact on the Gippsland Region of 3 fire complexes in a two week period, the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund has kicked into overdrive.

At the time of this release more than 55 cheques have been issued to people affected by the Delburn complex fires which impacted the Boolarra and Mirboo North Region on the 30^th of January 2009 with many more cheques to be written and distributed today.

President of the Gippsland based organization, John Mitchell, said while the response to the initial appeal after the Delburn Fires was exceptional, even more money is now needed to assist those affected by the other two fire complexes (Churchill and Bunyip) that impacted our area last Saturday.

“We were fortunate in that we had no loss of human life in the Delburn complex fires, but that all changed with the devastating fires on the weekend. Tragically many lives have now been lost, and this whole event is now a tragedy of massive proportions. The scale of the human ,stock , wildlife and asset losses is such that it is hard to comprehend and now a concerted effort is required to assist families to recover.”

The Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund was set up specifically to help people in Gippsland who are affected by emergencies and natural disasters.

“This is definitely the worst event that Gippsland has ever experienced “said John Mitchell “No one could have imagined the ferocity of this fire, nor the extent of it’s impact on our community. The funds we generate through the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund are quickly distributed to those in need based on the integrated assessment data provided by local councils and State agencies.”

John Mitchell added “The difference between donating to the National Appeal and the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund is that ALL money donated to GERF goes DIRECTLY to the victims of the fires in the GIPPSLAND area.

We have all seen the wonderful compassion and generosity of Gippslanders and Australians during this time and have been overwhelmed by the support - but the sad reality is still we need more cash donations so we can support the recovery of Gippslanders impacted by this tragic event”

People are urged to donate online to the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund by going to the website www.relieffund.org.au

Cheques can be sent to the Gippsland Emergency Relief fund at PO Box 508 Traralgon VIC 3844 or donations can be made at any National Australia Bank BSB 083 932 nominating the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund.

Victorians affected by the recent bushfires can now access information in four ways to help stay informed as their properties and communities are rebuilt. Chair of the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority, Christine Nixon, today launched the ‘We Will Rebuild’ website www.wewillrebuild.vic.gov.au which provides visitors with access to all relevant bushfire reconstruction and recovery information. “The ‘We Will Rebuild’ website is a one-stop-shop for all bushfire related information. Visitors can access information on financial and personal support and the reconstruction process, right through to how individuals and communities can have their say,” Ms Nixon said. “Internet access can be limited for those Victorians displaced by the bushfires so it is vital there are alternate ways people can access the information they need. The Victorian Bushfire Information Line (1800 240 667) will continue to provide callers with an easy way to access the information they need.” Victorians can also keep up to date with the reconstruction and recovery process via mobile phone. Mobile users can register for free SMS alerts by texting the word REBUILD and their postcode to 13 GOVT (13 46 88)*. In coming weeks, fire affected communities will also receive a regular newsletter to keep residents informed of activities underway in their local area. This newsletter will be delivered to community hubs, relief centres, municipal offices and local gathering places in fire affected areas. It will also be available for download from www.wewillrebuild.vic.gov.au Ms Nixon said the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority would provide support to fire affected communities to help people recover and rebuild in the way that they want. “Community organisations and individuals who have been affected will have opportunities to have their voice heard,” Ms Nixon said. “I have already visited a number of fire affected communities and will continue to attend community meetings in these areas to ensure both I and the Authority understands each community’s recovery and rebuilding needs. Following these meetings, the Authority will release a community engagement structure explaining how people can stay involved as we rebuild. “Local rebuilding plans will be developed to ensure each community’s economy, infrastructure and transport, environmental, and health and wellbeing requirements are met. “The Authority will work with communities to develop these plans and where needed will work with other government departments to make sure they are delivered,” Ms Nixon said.  Home>Recreation & Leisure>Warragul Leisure Centre Redevelopment   Warragul Leisure Centre Redevelopment  Printer Friendly The need for a study The Warragul Leisure Centre Redevelopment Committee has recommended to Council that an updated needs identification study be conducted to provide recommendations to Council and pave the way for future government support of new facilities. The most recent aquatic study was conducted in 2002 and the State government has advised that an updated study would provide better data to help secure funding in a highly competitive field. The Warragul Leisure Centre redevelopment will require external funding to make the project possible and it’s important to understand the evolving community needs.   Consultation A comprehensive community consultation and market research process is now being undertaken to validate and confirm community needs in the area of aquatics and leisure. This process includes: industry trends, key stakeholder interviews, focus group discussions with demographic groups, user groups and agencies, school surveys, independent phone interviews (300), leisure centre user surveys, public submissions and a summary of key issues. All demographic groups, community based agencies and groups that use or may use the facility in the future and residents are being targeted for involvement.
